The Senior Solutions Architect (Cloud) is responsible for leading the creation of a technology framework and providing technical leadership in support of NDRIO initiatives in cloud computing, with a focus all Cloud-type solutions that are scalable. As a member of the Strategy & Planning team, the Senior Solutions Architect (Cloud) reports to the Director of Architecture providing architectural leadership and best practices for the organization. The Senior Cloud Architect (Cloud) will be responsible for ensuring that critical applications are designed and optimized for high availability and disaster recovery. This position will collaborate with other Senior Solutions Architects, NDRIO team members, various working groups, NDRIO executives, and NDRIO Board.

They will have demonstrated high-level stakeholder engagement, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, good written and oral communication, sound professional judgement and a desire to learn about Canada’s research ecosystem.


  • Work independently to gather requirements and translate those into Commercial Cloud, Hybrid-Cloud, Private Cloud, or other virtualized or containerized solutions
  • Effective whiteboard storytelling to be able to communicate designs and strategies
  • Relay technical information to both technical and non-technical staff
  • PoC, Lab & Dev solutions engineering
  • Produce post Implementation project documentation
  • Provide proficient end-user systems administration training
  • Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) level expertise in all Cloud-type solutions that are scalable.
  • Participate in occasional speaking engagements to provide architectural and technical expertise


  • Masters’ degree in Computer Science, or in related area, with 10+ years of experience; or 15+ years of equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced Knowledge of compute, networking, storage, and database services as they pertain to virtualized environments.
  • Knowledge of recommended best practices for building secure and reliable applications on a cloud platform.
  • An understanding of one or more of the public cloud providers’ platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage personnel on projects from different disciplines, geographically dispersed, and with culturally diverse teams.
  • Proven leadership skills with a collaborative management system that will facilitate interaction within all levels of an organization, as well as its corporate partners.
  • Highly advanced skills and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: 
  • Hands-on experience using compute, networking, storage, and databases
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the public cloud providers deployment and management services
  • Experience with shell scripting, PowerShell, or Python
  • Experience with datacenter virtualization, orchestration, and containerization tools
  • Experience with configuration and monitoring software
  • Experience with heterogeneous computing technologies
  • Experience with virtualized GPU solutions
  • Experience with Linux and Windows server technologies
  • Experience with desktop virtualization tools
  • Experience with software packaging and deployment


  • TOGAF or Zachman certification.
  • AWS, Azure, GCP or Microsoft training.
  • Experience working in an Academic environment.
  • Experience with Matlab, R, and other scientific and engineering software and scripting tools.
  • Experience working in large Datacenters
  • Some exposure to Quantum technology
  • Working knowledge of the French language.
